If you are a small or large employer, this will be an important chance for you to learn about the key elements that are required in developing or updating your employee handbook.

An effective Employee Handbook not only outlines your company’s employment related policies and general rules of conduct, but it also helps you protect your legal rights and responsibilities as an employer. With everyone on the same page, you can all work together as a team.

As an important communication tool between you and your employees, this workshop, lead by Laurie Johnston of Miller Mayer and Lisa Patz of the CBORD Group, will help guide you through updating or developing an employee handbook to effectively communicate compliance with employment laws and employees and help manage risk in protection your business.

Laurie Johnston is a Partner in Miller Mayer’s Business Services group focusing on Labor and Law Employment Law. She assists clients in many facets of labor and employment law. She advises her clients on general employment issues, such as at-will employment, policy and procedural issues, and employee benefits such as unemployment compensation eligibility, and provides representation in claims brought under the state and federal employment discrimination statutes. She also assists clients whose employees are represented by various labor organizations with contract administration and negotitation and grievance arbitration. She has successfully defended employment discrimination matter befor the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the NYS Division of Human Rights and has assisted clients in resolving wage and hour claims with the U.S. Department of Labor and the NY Department of Labor. Notably, Ms. Johnston was responsible for the overturning of an arbitration award in the NYS Supreme Court and its affirmance by the Appellate Division, Third Department. (Massena Memorial Hospital v. CSEA, 300 A.D.2d 889, 752 N.Y.S.2d 745 (3rd Dep’t 2002).

Lisa Patz is the Vice President, Human Resources of the CBORD Group. Ms. Patz has significant experience as a human resources leader in both the public and private sectors. She has 25 years of experience in human resources management serving most of her time on CBORD’s Executive Management team. She also worked in human resources roles for the City of Ithaca and the Amalgamated Bank of NY in NYC.

Her background includes all facets of human resources and management. As a human resources generalist, her experience has ranged from driving talent and staffing management strategies, to developing leadership programs and managing projects associated with several mergers and acquisitions. She has been responsible for managing CBORD’s performance management and employee relations programs, employee policies and procedures, employee benefits, reward and recognition programs, as well as managing corporate communications and travel services.

Lisa is active in the Ithaca community. She is currently the Chair of the Tompkins County Workforce Investment board. She has been involved in a variety of HR committees over the years including the Tompkins County United Way, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, the Ithaca Science Center, the daVinci Project, and the TC Chamber of Commerce. She is also a Leadership Tompkins program graduate.

Topics to be covered:

  • Current legal requirements for employee handbooks, including recent decisions of the National Labor Relations Board that concern all private sector employers with or without a union
  • Will outline must haves for employee handbooks
  • Provide participants with a better understanding of what is needed or should be included in an employee handbook
